Work Or Play?

My wife, son & I drove up to the kids’ summer acting workshop in a cool, overcast, late summer afternoon. We were one of the earlier families to arrive. I teach at this performance camp sometimes in the summers, but this year my son will also be there as he’s finally old enough to sign up (though he’s only going on four, which would be actually 2 years too young at this workshop). The area we pull up is woodsy, with a good 20 picnic tables on a slight slope with a cabin behind. We get out and walk around, kind of hanging/waiting. My son sits at a table and starts talking to another boy, and they play some game on the table. In short order, many other families arrive and the picnic tables fill up quickly. It’s a relatively quiet gathering (for the number of people now there), but there’s an energy of great excitement and anticipation in the air.

Then it’s later. Next day? Wife’s gone, and my son is somewhere else (in a class somewhere?), but I’m still at the campsite. It’s warm and bright out, and I’m sitting in some small bleachers (2 sets, maybe 8-10 rows high) with many other people. I’m sitting near the top and next to the “aisle” in between the bleachers. Oddly, there’s some sort of tin “roof” over us, held up by poles in the corners. We’re watching some of the older actors in the workshop (late teens, early 20s) dance and goof around, and Cyndi Lauper is playing through the sound system. One of the girls yells out something along the lines of “Now that’s music!!” and the students whoop and holler. Darren is sitting near the top of the other section to my left, and he looks at me with that broad smile of his (something tells me he – we? – have been drinking) and he says, “Well?! We did our job as a generation!” and lifts his cup up with a wink to indicate he’s toasting. I’m looking back at the students now and wondering if I’m still teaching here, or is this just a big party? If it is a party, what happened to the workshop? And is it all right to be attracted to some of these women? They're certainly of age, but (1) are they students?, and 2) I'M MARRIED!
